Hi there, been a while since I've popped into these forums.

I've upgraded my Quest1 to CN8 and have noticed some performance issues.
Screen Redraws have been affected, going from the fluid looking 1 second update to something between 1.5 and 3 seconds.
It's not so noticeable when moving at speed with the map detail zoomed out; but as I do a lot of walking it is very noticeable in smaller zoom levels.
Changing map detail level doesn't seem to impact this.

I've been using the free Contour Maps at the same time as CS7, but if I try to use it at the same time as CN8 the screen redraws are anything up to 5 seconds.

I suspect this is down to the map segments being larger.

I'd be interested in hearing anyone elses experiences before I get in contact with Garmin Support.

Robert Elsinga has explained this problem as the result of the CNv8NT files being compressed. The processor now has to do more work in decompressing on the fly. Now throw in the POI complication and you have your slow re-draw scenario

The original Quest uses plain vanilla CNv8 and hence does not suffer

Afraid you misread my post.

It is the original Quest with CN8.

I'm guessing it's down to the fact that the map chunks are larger, so in my area instead of reading a 1MB map chunk the Quest is now having to plough through a 10.8MB map chunk.

I was considering starting a thread with a title along the lines of

CNEv8 - is it worth the trouble?

By that I meant partly the trouble I've been having even registering it (without the use of a credit card), since Garmin aren't responding to my emails and since Garmin UKs phone is permanently engaged (I'm beginning to think maybe they just have the one phone).

I also meant, are the improvements gained from the upgrade worth the £50 to £60 it takes to pay for it?

Having read your comments about how it really does slow it down, I'm starting to think the answer is "No. It isn't worth the trouble".

I have those contour maps too. I've never used them but I like to think that one day I will. For walking you're bound to want as much detail in the map display as possible so redrawing will be pretty slow, even with CSEv7. If CNEv8 is slowing it down even more, it's going to get extremely frustrating.

I was hoping upgrading to CNEv8 would fill in a few of the surprise small roundabouts I come across fairly often, and other little junction changes. From the list of road updates they sent out, it sounds like they've just added a couple of new roads but not done anything much about the small details that change all the time. Maybe that's not the case and they just haven't described it properly, I don't know.

Sorry about that!

And yes, I too have noticed the slower, but acceptable, redraws. I upgraded as it was free and was looking for increased detail in Spain. We are a group of riders who share and edit route files so it made sense to all have the same mapping data - not sure with hindsight that I would have paid for the upgrade
