Hi Guys

I hope the plethora of experience you have can help me.

I have an IPAQ 5450 and I purchased TomTom 2 a few weeks ago, I aslo got the TomTom car kit. During installation it did ask me to register and I did over the web. I then installed the 2.24 update and GPS update.

I put the IPAQ in the car, I left it for the recommended 45 mins when I got back the little LED on the receiver is flashing green but the software said GPS position unreliable. I have no "satellites" on the screen. I thought this may be my location so I left it for a few days. I then went to the NEC a Birmingham but still no satellites and GPS position unreliable.

I have tried it all over the country (my job takes me around allot which is why I wanted sat nav), but still no connection to satellites.

I have re-installed all of the software, including the updates, but still no luck. At no time can I remember being asked for an activation code but if I go onto ttcode.com it does say "this product has already been activated".

Should I be asked to re-activate on a re-install?

Any help would be greatly appreciated; I am at the point of throwing it all away. TomTom have been no help at all, they don’t reply to mails and I can’t find a phone number for support.

PLEASE HELP

Which version of Tomtom2 do you have, the TT2 or TT2 Bluetooth?

If the receiver is working, and the software is registered, then there may be a problem with the two 'talking' to each other.

When you have everything swithced on and the green light flashing (indicating a fix) run TT and switch to the view that gives you loads of icons (like Exit etc) one of them will be the GPS Status.

It has three views, Status, GOS & Log. Go to the GPS one.

At the top of this are 2 dropdown lsits where you need to select the driver and Com port. Select the relevant one for your setup. I believe it's COM1 for wired and COM8 for Bluetooth.

Make sure the the square to the left of these is ticked to activate the driver and then switch to the status view.

There will be 2 icons representing the GPS satellites and the Ipaq, there should be a series of dots which are greyed out and which look bold when a connection is in progress.

If you have a wired (I presume so as you did not mention Bluetooth) you should now have a fix & connection.

If you do have Bluetooth you need to establish a link between the devices first. I'll hold back on that until we know what you have.

Regards

Steve

Thanks guys.

I have the wired version, not bluetooth.

Steve, I know the screen you mean, and have set the GPS to Com1 (even tried some of the others just in case) and the box is checked.

In the status view there is nothing happening, everything is greyed out.

Should the GPS power off the IPAQ if not plugged into the cigarette lighter? Do you think it is something to do with the holder?

Even though I have uninstalled the application, on a reinstall it seems to "remeber" my settings. Iss there anyway to completely delete it other than a hard re-boot?

Hi

When I first used my PDA I had the same problem and did all that you have done. The little box had a tick in it as you describe but it still did not work. In desperation I removed the tick from the box and then put it back and lo and behold everything burst into life. Hopes this helps good luck

Have you by any chance loaded any other gps software?

You can only use the com port for one application at a time, which also reminds me to mention whether you are using an add-on keyboard which can sometime conflict.

Before worrying too much about TT2 you could download another GPS application such as GPS Dash (available here in the GPS tweak downloads). If that works your hardware is OK. Don't forget to close if fully before trying TT2 again - one app using the com port as above.

The GPS receiver does not power itself over the iPAQ. Most definitely you must connect it to the cigarette lighter socket. If you do that, do you see the green LED coming on?

Thanks for tips everyone.

Turns out they had sent me the wrong Car Kit even though it said it was for the IPAQ 5XXX series.

I went into Dixons looking at getting the Kane system and they had a TomTom car kit. I asked to look at it and noticed it ws different to mine. I got it plugged everything in off we went, worked first time. D'OH.

Once again thanks for the advice, its nice to know there are people willing to help.
