Hi everyone
Thinking about buying one of these but have a few questions.
How does the speed camera database info that you can upload to these work? More specifically, once uploaded, does it mean the device will work as both a navigation system and a speed camera detector? I was thinking of buying the Inforad speed camera detector but if the i3 will effectively do the same job with the speed camera database loaded as the Inforad, then I can save some money and just buy the i3.
Any help/advice much appreciated.
Thanks

It doesn't actually detect cameras - it merely knows the locations of all those specified in the POI file(s) - this includes fixed, temporary, mobile, red-light and specs. I'm not sure of the exact source of the information - I suspect much of it is contributed, but so far it's included all the ones I drive nearby to.
And what it does is warn you when you are near the location - by bonging, and displaying a red banner at the top telling you about the alert (ie the speed limit).
If you are travelling above the speed limit, it keeps bonging and shows the location of the camera on the map (using the appropriate bmp).
One thing I have found is that if you're travelling significantly below the speed limit (10 mph or more below the limit) it doesn't seem to point them out (ie the initial bong, with the red banner). |

The i3 doesn't detect the cameras, it just relies on the database to tell it where the cameras are. I downloaded the database and left all the settings as standard and it works all the time and is very good. There are a few "false" warnings when it knows there's a mobile camera location but when I get there, there's nothing there... but I'd rather know that there *could* be something there than not know at all.
If the database doesn't have a location down then you could run into an unexpected camera - it has no way (beyond being updated each month) of knowing of new or changed locations.
I've only ever found one camera that wasn't on the database, everything else has been spot on. |

Thanks guys for the swift and very helpful info.
Roughly how far in advance does it warn you of the speed camera locations? Are you able to update the speed camera info regularly for free?
Thanks |

It gives you PLENTY of warning, I believe it is set to half a mile. Although when you load the POIs there is an option to set the warning distance this does not appear to work. However, having said that I've neveer found the distance to be a problem, better too long than not long enough.
The speed camera files are updated every month or so and, yes, they are free, courtesy of Pocket GPS World |

ok i have two folders (ive used the rename.BAT) on both -
october = 37 files
november = 36 files
'zRedLight Cam.BMP' is in the october file but NOT in the november file
So is it a redundant file that i can delete OR should i copy it into the november folder?

Ive now fixed all the files by giving the excel and bmp files the same names and tidying them up etc.
Its just the Distance of Warning and Alert Speed when customising the POIs that wont work now (which i have written about in a different post regarding speed camera POIS) Thanks _________________ Garmin StreetPilot i3

Is there anyway to change the warning distance down for safety cameras yet?
I find it gives the warnings too early :D |

Use the "Manual" option in POI Loader instead of "Express" - then you can specify the trigger distance down to the nearest foot 8) |

Does that actually work then?
I set mine down and it didn't seem to make any difference, then i saw a post earlier with someone saying the option to change the warning distance doesn't work
I wondered if it was possible to change it usign excel or something... |

Definitely works if you change the distance manually for the proximity alerts. I set different distances for different speed cameras (i.e longer distances for the 60/70 mph and shorter ones for the 30/40 mph) and it works perfectly. |
