i plan to buy this PDA mainly because of its GPS capability but it seems that many of the websites (specially in US) i read don't even mention about the GPS thing in the technical data/specs. Does this mean that only those hx4700 being sold in UK are the units with built-in GPS and those units sold in the US or the rest of the world have no GPS in it? any inputs about this will be highly appreciated. thanks.

The Ipaq hx4700 does not come with built in GPS. But you can use any BlueTooth, Compact Flash, SD or Serial GPS (serial may require a sepcific cable).

Hi exp1orer,

Welcome to the forum! Thumbs Up

The HP iPAQ hx4700 does not come with a built-in GPS receiver. I think that there is only one HP iPAQ that does, and that is the hw6510 Mobile Messenger.

If you wish to use an hx4700 for SatNav then you will need a GPS receiver. Bluetooth GPS receivers are reliable and it’s best to go for a SiRF III based one if your budget allows. The GlobalSat BT-388 is an excellent receiver.

Regards,

SimonCatlin and Privateer,

Thank you very much for the quick reply. If i may add, where can i buy the hx4700 PDA+GPS package at the cheapest rate? Can you recoomend one? Thanks. Btw, which GPS software works smoothly with this hx4700 and is very user/viewer friendly for navigation while driving in UK?

Hi exp1orer,

Have a look at some of the advertisers on the right hand side of the screen. Thumbs Up

My favourite SatNav package for the UK is currently TomTom Navigator 5, although whether I’d recommend using TTNav 5 on an hx4700 is another matter!

The hx4700 is a VGA PocketPC, if you run TTNav 5 on a 4700 it looks very small when compared to running it on a QVGA (Quarter VGA) PocketPC such as an h2210.

You can use a registry hack to get the hx4700 to emulate a QVGA display, but I’ve not done that so I can’t comment on it.

Regards,

Seidio offers G4850 the new integrated GPS cradle with the latest SiRF III GPS for Ipaq 4700. This just like you have GPS built in with Ipaq 4700 while you are in the car.
