Earlier this week Bedfordshire Police contacted me about a large number of stolen TomTom GO 300 satnav systems (it wasn't me honest guv!). These were all boxed and palleted and were taken from a distribution centre in Luton.
Nearly 1350 GOs were taken in the raid, and are expected to be turning up for sale in the usual locations in the very near future. If you are suspicious about the origin of your GO then you can check the serial number against a list of stolen devices. Large Scale Satellite Navigation Theft
Detectives in Luton are appealing for information following the theft of £300,000 worth of satellite navigation systems from a storage building on Sunday night (November 20).
The theft of around 1350 machines occurred from the premises, which is on an industrial estate on the outskirts of Luton sometime between 6pm – 11pm.
Offenders forced entry into the building before stealing the machines, which were loaded on pallets waiting to be forwarded on to retailers. It is believed they used a red van to help remove them from the premises, which was later found empty and abandoned in Campton at around 11.45pm. CCTV footage shows three offenders were responsible for the theft.
Dc Keren Coton, from the Burglary and Autocrime Unit at Luton Police Station, said the theft had been well planned and is appealing for anyone with information to come forward. She said:
“Clearly the offenders new exactly when to strike as the satellite navigation systems were all packed up, loaded and ready to go. They must have planned how they were going to steal them and also have made arrangements in advance to sell them on. These kits sell for around £200 - £300 each and they won’t be able to store that many of them indefinitely, so they will be trying to get rid of them very quickly. If anyone is offered them for sale, or has information about who is responsible for this theft, please contact the police.”
Bedfordshire Police has linked up with an Internet site, which has created a national database for stolen and recovered satellite navigation systems, which are being increasingly stolen across the county.
The Pocket GPS World web site allows people to monitor stolen products and reunite them with their owners if offered for sale at a later date. The database can be found by logging on to www.pocketgpsworld.com
The serial numbers of the stolen satellite navigation systems from the recent haul are being posted on the web site so that anyone offered machines for sale can check to see if they are in fact stolen.
Dc Coton added; “The satellite navigation systems will not doubt be popular Christmas presents this year, so the black market could about to be flooded with them. Please make sure you buy your equipment from a reputable dealer, as this is the only way we will ever discourage people from stealing them in the first place.”

I guess that if they know all of the serial numbers for the units stolen you wouldn’t be able to register them with tom tom or update them thus rendering them worthless ??
Even the Metropolitan police do not care about stolen sat nav devices - even if you give them the home address of a known car thief. There's still a guy perpetually selling stolen sat nav devices on eBay who was reported by another eBay user three weeks ago! The police have even rung me about this man and don't seem to have done anything since then. He's since listed about 4 more stolen sat navs of various types (not a single one of which had a box/manual/CD/receipt/activation card etc). Very frustrating.
