I guess you could find out for certain by connecting a volt meter across the battery contacts with the compartment door open batteries out and plugged into the car socket. I would be quite supprised if it did charge them because if you had alks in it would not be to clever to bung a charge into them ..I know on Garmin units you can select alks or nimh but i thought this was to get a more accurate bat life remaining meter reading.

I know for certain that mine doesn't charge rechargeable batteries, either when using the car power lead or when connected to the PC via the USB lead.
Which is a surprise really, means I need to recharge the batteries externally every so often. |

I just tried a meter - an ammeter connected to the two exposed battery ends with the battery cover removed while it was plugged into the PC USB port. There was 0.24 mA coming OUT OF the batteries! Very odd indeed. |

are you sure it wasn't current going through the batteries of which the batteries themselves is a source? Ammeter has a very low resistance, won't you be effectively completeing the circuit using it like that? |

No, all I was doing was replacing the contact in the battery cover (which connects one battery end straight to the other) with the ammeter. Hence I had the batteries, the ammeter, and the GPS unit in series with each other. The batteries were being drained of 0.24 mA (which would use them up in 1 year of continuous usage). Hmmmm doesn't really matter then, as rechargeables lose their charge quicker than that anyway! |

I went through the PCB once again and unless I missed it completely there is no battery charger. |

That is a great pity. Most things nowadays charge batteries when plugged in. Although if the GPS consumes 500mA (possible, not tested it), then any more for a charger would exceed USB spec (although it could perhaps tell if it was plugged into USB or the car). |

I can confirm mine does not charge the NiMH batteries (I've set it to NiMH in the settings - this is perhaps only for accurate battery level indication?). I have it in the car for 45 mins to work and 45 mins back each day, and the batteries are not filling back up.
P.S. tried to add this to my last post - is there an "edit" function in this forum? - it looks like it runs on the same engine as the one at opera.com, they have an edit. |
