|
|
Hi
Iam about to purchase a larger SD card for my GO.
Will a 256mb card be large enough?
Obviously the bigger the better, but is their any disadvantage with having a 512mb or even a 1gb?
Are their any issues with certain brands or should all of them work?
So called "High Speed" cards i.e. 10mb/s transfers......are they nesesary for the Go......or is a standard one enough....2mb/s transfer?
I know thats a few questions....but it would be nice to know.
Cheers

i've read somewhere on this forum that high speed sd cards don't work so good on the old tomtom, i would just stick with the standard speed ones, i have a kingston 1gb and it works beltin' for me :D
+ don't bother to format it as they come ready to use, some people have had problems when they've formated new cards. |

Errrrr.......ok you say dont format.....
Other people have said I should format or it wont work.....
Other thing is......is their any point in having a 1gb card......if The Go didnt limit the amount of POI's you can add then I could see a need for it.....but otherwise
It would be so much beter if the Go allowed you to delete some of the errr......useless POI e.g. Places of worship or Frontier Sites (which from wot I can gather only exist in Northern Ireland anyway). If your using 5.0 software then POI limit is 40.....but if you have (upgraded) then its 27, hmmmm.......backwards upgrades, nice one TomTom :o
Oh well.....maybe they will have sorted that in future software updates.

The main reason for adding a very large card is to add maps of other countries. PoI files are relatively small, so going up one size would be enough, if that is all you want to put on it. _________________ TTGO 700 (dead)

So you think a 256mb will be plenty for me?
I only use the Go in this country, but would like plenty of space to add celeb voices and quite a few POI's.

I haven't got any celeb voices, but the standard ones are all less than 1MB. PoI files are often small - eg Tesco is only 12 KB. The speed cameras are a bit bigger but still under the 1MB all in.
The only very large PoI set was the "old" postcode files which were 45 MB and took a long time to search and open. Postcodes are compressed and included on the original card now. _________________ TTGO 700 (dead)

just passing on what i have heard on these forums, i did not format my new sd card when i got it and it worked right away, so thats also why i said my bit, try it without formating and if it dont work you havent lost anything !
the poi's that come with the tom tom are a bit useless at times, like the hospital poi doesn't even have the royal albert infirmary in wigan (aka wigan infiramy) it's been there for donkey's years lad!!! hope they fix it so you can delete the built in poi's. |

I dont understand why people format SD ,XT, MMC etc since they always come ready for use _________________ TTG 300,External Aerial

I dont like the sound of that..... when using postcode search I have found no delay on opening or searching, which SD are you using. _________________ TTG 300,External Aerial

I think you misunderstood.
Postcode search on the codes that come with the GO are fine. I was referring to the ones that were supplied as large files and accessed via the PoI system. They were only needed for the early GO with the older system and files. _________________ TTGO 700 (dead)

I have been useing the cheapest SD cards I can find, My main card is a Kingston 256mb which I use for every day use and it is crammed with the latest updates, voices, splash screens, speed cameras and the max no. of POI's and I dont have a problem at all, My other card is an Integral 128mb which has the latest updates, Speed cameras and a different set of POI's which I swap if I need to, it is a bit slower than my 256mb card but it does the job. I have never had to format any of these cards. Unless you need to add more maps a 256mb is plenty big enough. |
