Why should someone bin their £200 GPS unit just because it has some minor damage done to it?

I guess the Retailer and Garmin figure that they are selling GPS units for £200 and someone has done £5 worth of damage to a unit, the retailer would be told to exchange it under warranty with no questions asked and the manufacturer would repair and refurbish the broken unit.

Sure, they have no legal obligation to do this (in this case it appears that the GPS was broken though negligence, although it was a genuine mistake Crying or Very sad) but they obviously think that the value of the goodwill is far higher than the cost of repairing the returned unit. It's certainly not fraud.

Sigh, Please lets not go there again, it is fraud.

Fraud - A deception deliberately practiced in order to secure unfair or unlawful gain.

So can we please just let this drop.

I have problems with a new £8million road system installed where I live. i3 tries to send me on road now closed off as there is a new underpass built for access to A1. I emailed Garmin who told me there was a map update (v8) expected in November. Also told me if I did not register my i3 until then I would qualify for a free map update. I'm waiting patiently and accept the "recalculating" message every time I go out.

I had this problem with my previous Tomtom Navigator on the A1 near Braintree. It was trying to send me around roundabouts that I could see 300 yards to the left off a slip road. Had never been in the area before and was seriously confused!

AFAIK Tomtom have no plans to release map updates. Glad I ditched it for the I3.

Sorry, I'm a bit confused - Are we saying that if you have registered your i3 already you do not qualify for a free map update?

we are saying that you must register to receive any due updates (according to garmin).....but, i have just tryed to register online and the site is asking me for a 'registration code'....putting in all the numbers/codes i can find just bounces the form back saying wrong code, so, i rang garmin and they are looking into the problem...its something to do with the preloaded mapping on the card....will let you know what happens..

After reading this post I Immediately sent this message to Garmin, I will keep you informed of any replies.

"Hi.

I just read on a forum that a map update for the Streetpilot i3 is imminent? am I correct in assuming I am entitled to a free update? I registered my i3 on 5th September 2005."

Noooo! Wait for the updated maps to come out and then register and claim your free upgrade.

The upgrade is given based on the date you register your unit, not the date you buy it. If you register after the upgrade comes out then you get the upgrade for free (perhaps they presume you have just brought it and it has outdated maps), but if you register before the upgrade comes out then you will have to pay. The last upgrade was £100.

This may be considered fraud on your part or goodwill on Garmin's part depending on your point of view. Wink Wink

Stop!

Hi zogman

I registered online no problems then received a eamil from them varifying registration, the 8 digit number is on a sticker inside the battery lid on mine.

If it turns out that recently registered units will have to pay for update then *looks over shoulder for any plods* take it back and get a new one... kidding
