Thanks for the info guys. Just looked at the HP website and it STILL says the 4700 is discontinued. Any none-IT site would have sorted that by now, back-end, front-end, side-end or any other end type-of-problem.
I have a 4705 (the US version of the 4700) which I bought in the US in May, and I have a question which I'm hoping someone may be able to answer (I've spoken to HP Technical Support and they haven't a clue!). It's not a question about GPS, but I think this site should change it's name to Mobile Life because you can find answers on here for anything mobile... and much better than any Technical Support Team.
Anyway, my question...
We all know that there is a memory leak when running TTN5, but did you know that it leaks memory even without TTN5 running???? At a slower rate, but it does leak memory. To check, close all your apps and then check amount of memory left. Then do a soft reset and see the difference. Do you have the same problem? Does anyone know a fix for it? When I spoke to Tech Support they said I could try downloading the ROM upgrade, but they didn't know if it would fix it! In fact, they didn't even know there was a problem... even though people were talking about it on the HP forum (unfortunately with no answers). Further, they could tell me if it would delete all my apps (i.e. would I need to reload them again).
I would be grateful for any help... PLEASE. It's a fantastic bit of kit, but there's so many little bugs with it (I know of a few others too!!!)
oops! A typing mistake in my last reply. It should have said that HP COULDN'T tell me if it would overwrite my apps. It's amazing how a couple of missed letters can give totally the opposite meaning.
Many thanks Darren, and PDQ too! (Pretty Damn Quick in case anyone doesn't know). Shame HP Technical Support don't know that it is a bug and that the ROM update fixes it.
I guess I'll need to make a note of all the apps and re-install them again... unless you know of a better method.
I recently bought my 4700, and the BIOS version is 1.10. I checked HP website, and that seems to be the most recent. So I should be fine.
I thought I'll just suggest to people who'd want to update the BIOS. Could you not take a backup of the PDA and apply the BIOS update. And then when it's back to factory settings, restore from you backup? Will this be a quicker way or is this too simple to be good?

Im sorry but if you spend more than £253 on a PDA and dont get this top of the range WIFI, 640 X 480 VGA , 624MHZ Dell then you deserve to be ripped off

There is another, small, BIOS update available on the HP Web site for this PDA, which is installed over 1.10. It's called "SP31186.exe" and takes a few moments to install. Unlike the major BIOS updates it doesn't wipe your system, forcing you to reinstall your software, but acts like a standard program install. Everything remains in place after installation. :D
I had found that a few irritating anomalies with my hx4700 disappeared after that update so I can commend to you guys.

Well, everyone is entitled to their opinion, i do think yours is designed to inflame though considering the topic of the thread. As you have expressed your point of view, i shall mine;
A couple of guys have X50v's at the office so i have experience of this PDA, and whilst very good they will always be "the cheaper" alternative. The colour quality of the screen is poorer, the case is plastic... the battery life is poor, in fact the only thing i prefer over the iPAQ is the stylus, which is a nice 2 colour silver/black affair. In life generally you get what you pay for, i think the 4700 is a nicer, quality unit that looks great and feels even better, together with all the extra premium software thats bundled in the ROM i certainly don't feel ripped off. The Dell X50V is a nice unit, and its worth the £250, the iPAQ is worth more, which is why people pay more, In my opinion
As for the 4700 being discontinued, can't say i'm overly bothered by it, mine runs sweet as a nut, and whether its discontinued or not i will be running it for another year at least. To make full use of WM5's persistent memory feature, as i understand it, you would need to have hardware to support it anyway. I don't think i would upgrade the OS i have to WM5, as i don't think the additional features would benefit me all that much, as for end of life, comes to us all _________________ Apple iPhone 5, Navigon, Brodit ProClip Mount
1) Yes the Dell screen is stunning, but the HX4700 is bigger and better.
2) The HX4700 feels stronger, but at the end of the day, as long as things don't drop off and the finish doesn't peel like a banana the Dell is acceptable.
3) The battery life of the HX4700 is better.
One thing that I have never liked about the HX4700 is the mouse pad, it should have had buttons!
Here's the pros and cons given by a mobiletech review (on Dell):
Pro: Overall, a very good device. Attractive and ergonomic design, good price, VGA display, fast processor, both CF and SD slots with SDIO support for the SD slot, Bluetooth 1.2 and WiFi, has Windows Media Player 10 which unlike Windows Media Player 9 can play videos stretched to full screen (handy if you want to watch your QVGA movies full screen).
Con: The buttons are too easy to press and the d-pad is a little small. Standard battery capacity is a lean: consider the extended battery. The screen isn't as nice or as large as the iPAQ hx4700 nor is current 2D graphics performance as good. But the Dell costs less and we may see driver improvements in the future.
So paying 1/2 for my Dell Axim x50v ($358 US) compared to the iPaq 4700 is continuing to be reaffirmed as a wise decision. For those that continue to support HP with their continued lack of support for you (I was burned by the lack of continued support for my 2210), in the words of Montey Python,
