Guys,
Sorry about not posting any earlier we were under embargo until today.
Memory-Map will be officially announcing the latest version of their Ordnance Survey mapping software. They have moved away from the naming convention of years and this will now be known as V5.
For us PDA users there are no enhancements or bug fixes (are there any bugs?) in this release. Which is a pity as the one issue I have with Memory-Map is that it doesn't write tracks to storage until the application is closed. This means that if the PDA crashes during a long journey all your overlay data will be lost.
Moving back to the PC application there have been no stunning additions to functionality this time. What Memory-Map have done is improved the way a lot of the existing features work. The two best items for me are: the Maps and the Overlay Management, I will cover these in more detail below. Also improved is the 3D view giving seamless display; Printing of maps over multiple pages; Multimedia routecards; and the addition of a Digital Map server for downloading high resolution images.
The Maps have updated to the latest versions released by the OS as you would expect. What is new and exciting is that they have also been consolidated in the same way as the US maps into one large map. This may be a single region, half the country, or the whole of the UK. Not only can you have a single map of the UK you can also get (with the Premium edition) aerial photos of the whole country (except Scotland). All of which fits onto a single DVD. This really is something I have been looking forward to for a while.
Having the regions seamless should help creating larger maps for downloading to your PDA. Unfortunately for me the way the split has worked out I was supplied region 1 which cuts my cycle routes in half not giving full coverage. So with the new map data you will have to be careful what areas are covered if you live near a boundary.
The other area that has been dramatically improved is the Overlay Management. I haven't yet had a chance to try this with my old 2004 overlays, but they almost killed the system when loading or accessing the overlay property screens ( I have in excess of 100,000 waypoints and routes saved). The new facilities make it much easier to group items and make these groups visible en mass. A really useful feature for me as it allows me to turn on all my WiFi hotspots, or Gatso Cameras. Custom icons were introduced in the last version. This version makes it much easier to manage them. The routes now have a different style set. One of the problems of 2004 was that no matter which colour you choose it sometimes would not be obvious on the map. This has changed with the ability to choose from a full colour pallet with different line styles, and thicknesses.

North England for 70 quid is a decent price - I might be tempted, if there are significant additions/ updates to the map (where do I find out what they have done?) the two way maps I used for this area in the previous version were a pain as you transgres from one area to the other - fine on the PC but not the PDA, what I might do is go for the 25,000 scale for the same area, more costly but that would be a real boost for the system, any indications of price for the same area (northern) at the higher definition, or is it still draw a circle around an enclosed area? - Mike

I believe it is still ad draw circle round the area having no been told different. I must admit that I havent actually used this service. Maybe I should ask them for a demo... :P
As far as the PDA is concerned did you ever try cutting sections from the 2 areas and then merging the cut maps. I am not sure if you can do this, but I have merged huge areas of the USA using the map merge feature. Having said that the maps merged were individual maps and not derived from other maps. _________________ Mike Barrett

Why not get them to demo at the meet? it might give a few of us chance to ask a few questions (or are they too busy?) - thanks for the update will have to work out the cost - I have used 25,000 scale before and it is superb for either walking or the mountain bike - Mike

I certainly will be asking them along, especially as it is just down the road from them. as they are one of the sponsors of the PocketGPSWorld.com car I am sure they will be there. We havent invited any companies at the moment, the invites should be going out this week. _________________ Mike Barrett

One of the things I have been playing around with is the latest Garmin Forerunner 301. This is an excersise based GPS device that is worn on the wrist.
It is designed for running and cycling. As I cant run to save my life so I use it on my bike. The GPS is coupled with a wireless heart monitor, which makes for some interesting readouts. Memory-Map V5 (and a patch release of 2004) support the heart rate data from the GPS and can display it in the profile panels.
The above screen shows my cycle trip this evening. And yes that did peak at 181 beats per minute. I am not sure if the heart rate monitor is a good thing when the old ticker gets going like that. On the other hand I have used it for some time now and can say that I am getting fitter, and that generally you can see the difference on the HR profiles.
I would also like to point out that my maximum speed was 1.5 MPH under the speed limit officer. Honest the GPS says so.
Since I have had the Garmin Forerunner 301 I have used it for doing a lot of analysis, riding the same routes in different conditions, and at different times of the day. I take great pleasure in sitting at home after and seeing how many calories I have burnt off, and how the heart, speed and altitude all correlate. _________________ Mike Barrett

Can you just confirm something for me regarding the Garmin 301 (bought one a week or so back - not realy used it yet).
Does it work with MM OS 2004 (I'm currently running v4.4.3), its just that your last post mentions MM v5 with an update from 2004.
It does work with MM OS 2004 but not the originally released version. You need to download the latest 2004 version from the Memory-Map site. This had the compatibility for the forerunner 301 built in. _________________ Mike Barrett

Thanks for confirming that Mike.
Better go and put that new tyre on the bike so I can give it a try.
I can guarantee that you will have fun with this. I find that the technology is an enabler to keeping me fit. It gives me some goals to achive and exceed. _________________ Mike Barrett
As a user of MM2003 and now MM2004 OS, I'm a little p'ed off that they are going to expect me to shell out another £100+ for the updated app. There was no mention of an upgrade path from 2004.

I'm also more than a little dissatisfied with this upgrade. I only bought a new map region last week and now it is going to cost me 69 quid to upgrade it! I have 5 different regions, some of them as selections so I am going to have to shell out a lot of money to upgrade everything.
Are the 2004 maps still going to be available or are they going to totally shaft us? I really don't see why we can't use the existing maps with the new application.
Earlier this year I bought a 'selections' area with a faulty aerial photograph - it took many emails to even get them to respond to me and over 6 months to get it fixed. for this they offered me a £10 token against my next purchase. Great! thier products are much cheaper than that from excellent suppliers like Global Positioning Systems so I was never able to use it.
