I have had mine now for nearly a month and haven't registered yet.
Your post tells me I've done the right thing.
Hope V8 is worth it..... |
but the email to locksmith is suggesting that you would still get a free update even if you have registered (after Nov. 04) so why not register? |

Hi Almahadeus
If you read the email that was sent to Locksmith, together with the Map Update page of Garmin, it suggests (to me anyway) that you only get one free update, and that's only if you register after the release date of a newer map than was enclosed with your product.
I'm thinking I have nothing to loose by waiting, but will be taking a risk if I do register.
By the sound of it Version 8 should be out in a week or two anyway. |

Anyone got any news on the V8 release ? I've just ordered my Quest and am wondering if to stick at V6 until V8 comes out.
Also can anyone let me know what the significant difference is between V6 and V7 - is it just that V7 has the newer roads in it ?
Thanks,
Richard |

My expectations, based on the development from CS 4 until 7, is that Navteq (the map maker) first expands coverage in already covered areas and then adds more countries. So, I expect the European CS 8 to have better (complet?) coverage in the Czech republic, Ireland and Spain/Portugal. And ofcourse the addition of newer roads in the already covered countries and correction of errors users have submitted.
Maybe, if there is time to add more countries, they will add Poland and/or Croatia in some detail. But, they might not... since both countries have routable maps available today and they might not want to p*ss off their importers/distributors there.
And: it might be announced in November, the last couple of updates shipped not earlier than january or february. So, I don;t expect to get my hands on v8 until Q1 2006. But hey, they might surprise me. ;) _________________ Robert Elsinga =8- )

Maybe things are different in Europe ...... but I think everyone is confusing registration. Registration really does nothing concerning Mapsource - Unlocking does everything. You have to unlock CD/DVD mapsource programs to use them on your GPS - the UNLOCK date is the key.
"FREE UPDATES:
If you ORIGINALLY & NEWLY unlocked a NEW locked MapSource CD-ROM/DVD-ROM product ON or AFTER the release date of an update for that same product, you are eligible to unlock on that specific update what you unlocked on the original for no charge. In other words, you can update to the latest data for free!"
If you are talking about Quest 2 with City Navigater NT preloaded (or any other preloaded GPS) - neither do anything - you are stuck with what is preloaded in all cases!
" HOWEVER, this is NOT applicable to models which come with detailed maps pre-loaded and without CD or DVD-ROM's in the packages, such as the StreetPilot C330 or StreetPilot 2620. Also, if you own one unit which can use the MapSource NT format but a second which cannot, you will NOT be able to unlock the NT maps to that second unit."

Thought I'd add Garmin does have a confusing way of updating programs/data. Mapsource is the program that your computer uses and all updates are always free. Current version is 6.8 with a 6.9 Beta.
City Select, City Navigator, etc. are programs with the DATA that your GPS and computer use to navigate. Data has to be unlocked to be used. Free updates are based on unlocking AFTER an update is released.
HERES the confusing part: Garmin sends FREE update CD/DVD's to anyone that askes for them BUT they are basically useless until you pay to unlock them.
As I earlier stated if your GPS (Quest2) comes with pre-loaded City Select NT (NT has different compression and algorithms from regular City Select) you are stuck with what you got.
....... again I'm thinking Europe and USA updates are handled similarly.
