Do I need a Sat -Nav s/w package to use the camera database?

Hi all, sorry if this is covered in a FAQ already, but had a trawl around and couldn't see anything .
I already have a built -in In-Car SAT-NAV system and am looking for a speed camera detector.
Is there a way to use a PDA or SmartPhone (Orange SPV c500) and load the camera database onto it without having any Sat-Nav s/w like Tom-Tom or Co-pilot (I know I would have to connect a GPS receiver to the PDA/SPV so it would know where I am)

Also, I have a Garmin Vista that I used before I got the Built-in Sat-Nav - can I use that (serial output) to somehow connect to the PDA or SPV (both USB & bluetooth) to use the GPS features?
I have seen some good posts regarding getting the database onto the Garmin, but would really like to be able to use the colour screen of the PDA/SPV as I think that will be more 'in your face' which is important for a warning system I believe.
