Becker and Tele Atlas have developed a solution that informs you continuously of the maximum speed on European motorways. The new Tele Atlas navigation CD Europe 2003/2004 for the Becker Traffic Pro and DTM systems displays the speed limit on your GPS navigation system – from the North of Norway to the South of Sicily. Tele Atlas has done all the hard work for you, collecting over 26,000 speed limits on 100,000 kilometres of European motorways. 12,000 of these speed limits are variable; they are modified automatically depending on the weather, traffic situation and peak and off-peak hours.

A step in the right direction, but speed limits are much more important on local roads. Motorways are considered to be by far the safest type of road and as such, speed limits are not usually enforced very strongly in most countries. It's rare to find speed cameras on motorways in places where local authorities don't stand to make money from it.
Lets hope that one day, most GPS systems are able to warn you if you exceed the speed limit on local roads. Unfortunately at present, none of the companies that provide map data seem to incorporate speed limits in their data - the closest they get is to describe the road type.

I remember testing one of the first in-dash units like this for Ford in a Ka. it was a Becker and very good, but took 2 hours to find the satellites after using the Chunnel |

How do they do that then? Does it pick up the data using using RDS or something? |
