I have been using my iPAQ 3870 for GPS for a little while now and the other day it just suddenly developed a fault. Whenever you turn it on an error appears saying "Fatal Application Error, Application shell32.exe has performed an illegal operation...". Now i know this has something to do with Windows so how do I go about fixing it, whenever you close the error message it resets the device. Some programs still work with the error in the background but my gps software has now stopped working.

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

I suspect that your only option is to hard reset (wiping the machine's memory) and, hopefully, restore a recent backup from before this problem occurred - otherwise you'll have to delete your existing partnership, create a new one and reinstall all your applications (many of which will be sat in ActiveSync's Add/Remove Programs screen waiting to be reinstalled).

Hopefully you can, at least, sync the machine and back up all your data somehow with your iPAQ in the degraded state you describe.

It may be possible to sort the problem (particularly by taking items out of the \Windows\Startup folder - but that is a risky thing to do as you may crash the device utterly) - but off the top of my head I'm not aware of any fix for this. A hard reset seems to be recommended, I'm afraid.

Hi

A friend of mine had this problem too, the ipaq just seemed to get itself in a mess.

Hard reset sorted his ipaq out.
