Hi Everyone,
I have just Upgraded TTN3 to TTN5 on HP Jornada 568 PDA and found that my original Destinator wired GPS receiver does not work with TTN5. I keep getting a 'No GPS Detected' message.
This is despite the fact, that I have used this GPS module with Destinator 3.0.64 & TTN3.07 with absolutely no problems at all in the past.
I have tried various connection methods the most obvious choice being 'Other Cable NMEA GPS' in TTN5 GPS setup @ 19200bps & others @ serial com port1.
None of the variants have worked as yet. Does anyone have any ideas? I have seen some Guys have mentioned editing the PDA registry on other Forums.
Even though TOMTOM state that this GPS receiver is supported by TTN5, One thing I have noticed is that the receiver previously used a setting in Destinator and TTN3 of Com1 19200bps and SiRF protocol not NMEA.
There does not seem to be a setting for SiRF protocol in TTN5 unless I am missing something?!? maybe it is a standard protocol in TTN5, however, it seems strange that no specific mention of SiRF is made in the setup.
I have emailed TT support and am awaiting a response!
If this does not work does anyone know of a good wired GPS receiver to use with the HP Jornada 568 PDA and TTN5
Thank you
Sanstorm

you have the finger on the wound - the receiver is set to SIRF protocol but TTN5 only understands NMEA. You need to reprogram the receiver. _________________ Lutz

Hi Everyone
Good news! Thanks to good old Google I was able to locate a reasonable explanation to the problem at this site: http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/winfastnavigatorppc.php
It was a protocol problem as Ibendlin mentioned in his post.....spot on mate!
Apparently TTN5 does not recognise or use the SiRF protocol but uses NMEA protocol. Which is a shame! As I understand, the SiRF protocol has a faster data transfer speed e.g. 19200bps instead of the NMEA's 4800bps.
The higher transfer speed allows for buffering of the data and releases CPU resources and a spin-off to that is better multi-tasking and cooler running PDA.
From the link above I was able to download Winfast Navigator software and use it to check the operation and settings of the GPS module and after some nail biting moments re-program it from the SiRF (19200bps ) protocol to the much (s)lower NMEA (4800bps).
Problem is it shows that the data transfer is slower because now it tells me to turn while I am actually taking the turn, whereas TTN3 running with SiRF 19200bps would tell me a good 50m before the turn!?!!?! Not Good!
Anyway thanks again Ibendlin for you reply and I will have to monitor performance of TTN5.

you can set NMEA to any speed you like. But you will see NO performance difference. Sirf (as well as higher baud rates) only allow the processor to wait faster. _________________ Lutz
