My Tom Tom Go 300 froze after I've used it for 3 days...yes only 3 days!!!

I was doing route planning and it froze, so i switched it off and switched it on again...then it froze on the tom tom logo page. It wouldn;t turn off unless i use the paperclip to push the reset buttom at the bottom - still it froze on the same page.

I went to download the update version 5.201...backup my files, install the update (which took some 3 minutes only) ...then my Tom Tom wouldn;t even start up!

I considered the possibility of a flat battery so plugged it to my car charger but no reponse still...

So I restored my original files and reinstall the update....again no luck...

My last resort is to contact Tom Tom Customer Support (08451610009)...never got through, the system cuts me off completely - doesn;t even let me wait even if I'm willing to wait!? I'm suspicious that maybe many more users have problems with Tom Tom and were trying to get help too.

If you have another tel number to contact Tom Tom or other means please let me know.

I am considering to return it to Amazon (if i could at all) becoz i think the product is defective.

Thanks.

The GO can freeze if you overload the SD card. Have you added lots of PoIs? Or planned and stored a lot of Itineraries?

You can make more room if you remove some foreign voices.

The GO needs some space on the SD card for route calculation. If you caused it to try and overwrite a system file, it would give your symptoms.

Did you make a FULL backup of the card before you started using it? If so, restore from the backup. If not, you could try a download and install of the system software from TomTom site and hope it repairs it. If a bit of map has been corrupted you will have to take it back to the retailer.

Thanks for your reply.

I was not aware that I should store a backup of my files before I use my Tom Tom for the first time. If only I read around before I use it.

I have indeed added 7 POI pairs of files. I only made a copy of my files after I added the POI files. Now I have deleted them - does it make any difference to the original files?

I have stored about 10 favourites on the Tom Tom...would this take up a lot of space?

You mentioned about itinerary planning...is this the same as pressing "navigate to" some places and then browsing the maps? if not then I don't think i have (the chance to) use this function yet so it shouldn;t be taking a lot of space.

Anyway I shall take your advice and remove some files...perhaps the voice files first - i need the CD-rom to do this right? or can i just delete some files direct from the SD card?

You can delete any voices you don't need without using the CD or a PC at all.
Just go to "change voice" in "preferences" and there should be options for "test", "select" and "delete".

Thanks for the reply.

My current biggest obstacle is that my TTG300 wouldn;t even start...so I can't access the menu or anything at all.

I didn;t drop it and I have checked it's not a flat battery.

It wouldn;t connect to my PC becoz I can't turn it on. So the only way I can access the files is using my card reader.

Will it turn on without the card in the slot? Press and hold the button. This should display a screen with firmware info. Info probably won't be much help. but if this doesn't turn on, I would say it's a hardware problem and should go back.

It just wouldn;t turn on.

I guess you're right...it's a hardware problem...i probably need to ask for an exchange. That;s not going to be easy either =P

I got it from amazon. I should be able to return/exchange it within 30 days if the TTG is defective.

I'd get on to them and request a return - the quicker you do it the better.

All the feedback I've seen on Amazon returns has been good so hopefully you won't be subjected to too much hassle.

Good Luck........
