John its the Crap 2.90 software release which caused your problems, the arial has nothing to do with anything.

Try plugging your lead for the i3 in another and see if it does the same, if it does take it back and get them to swap it.

Looks like the antenna may be a must for me - best I can get in the car is two bars - but doesn't seem to effect the unit
