The Office for National Statistics has revealed that traditional sat navs have been removed from the cost of living index - an index that measures differences in the price of goods and services to calculate inflation.
Our changing shopping habits mean that personal sat nav devices have been relegated as we increasingly turn to the vehicle's integral factory-fitted system or free map apps on smartphones and tablets.
It is certainly not the case that sat navs per se are becoming less popular - some luxury cars are now even being built with multiple sat navs so that passengers in the back seats can follow the journey.
The Office for National Statistics commented: "A number of items have been removed in 2015 to make space for new additions. In some cases, this reflects low or decreasing expenditure, such as on satellite navigation devices where smart phone applications are increasingly being used for navigation purposes and some new cars already have built-in devices."

I agree with Mike Barrett (this weeks newsletter) that putting things like PNDs in the so called basket to calculate RPI is farcical.
One year there was a plasma TV, something we all buy every day!
It seems to me that the government use things that don't rise in price to calculate the average price rise, um, clever maths.
