Hi all, just 2 questions. When using the cameralaert on android is it using my data allowance? This isn't too much of a concern in Uk, but going to France shortly & I don't want to incur expensive data roaming charges.
If I disable data roaming will the app. still work albeit with no maps?
kind regards to all

It will not use data when in use. You will need to activate the GPS for it to work though, needs to know where you are.
The GPS will not use data either.
If you update camera alert whilst abroad, you will need 3g connection and that will use data. However, if you use a free wifi hotspot, again no data useage.
Camera Alert can run on it's own in the background without a map running as well. Although there are a couple (well at least 1) 'free' Open Source maps that you download to SD card and you can run them if you want a map.
Quality, detail and coverage may be so so.
Hope I got that all right!

Data is ONLY used when
1) you download a database update (about 400KB)
2) you have map view turned on
Data-roaming is a system-setting of which apps have no control. If you turn off data roaming then there is no way for any data to be used even if the app tries - i.e. in map mode with data roaming off then you will see the grey criss-cross tiles and the camera icons. You can cache some tiles if you scroll around the area in different zoom levels on wifi for example but we have no control over how much is cached.
In the UK if you havea limited data plan then, again, data is only used when downloading updates and when loading map tiles. A 3hour trip may use about 1-2MB of data but that is shear guesswork! It depends on your speed, how frequently the map needs to zoom in/out (and hence load different tiles) etc.
Hope that helps? |
