pocketgpsworld.com
A former Stockton councillor, who campaigned for speed cameras to be installed on a busy stretch of road, has been banned after speeding on precisely the same road that his campaign was focused on.

A former leader of Stockton Borough Council, Ken Lupton, was disqualified from driving for six months as he already had nine points on his licence.

Commenting on the ban, he said: "Ironically, I had just put out a news letter to residents outlining the fact that we were asking for cameras to be put in Darlington Road because of excessive speed there."

Lupton claimed in mitigation that he was speeding as his elderly father, a dementia sufferer, had been found wandering the streets by a neighbour.

Well, at least he has seen the irony in it!

But he already had 9 points! More to this than meets the eye?

It may have been drink-driving offences? Those are perfectly safe though, otherwise there'd be cameras to catch people. So this one speeding fine/points is his only dangerous thing.

Remember: speed kills.

Clearly his speed campaign was a well-disguised cry for help: "Somebody - stop me before I kill someone, possibly my own demented father!"

I know it's wrong to laugh but possibly now they've caught the serial speeder there, the cameras won't be needed?

His mitigation was pretty rubbish too - his father "had been found by a neighbour" so obviously not in danger. I must admit though, I didn't laugh as loudly as I did when Brunstrom got nicked a few years ago! Very Happy

Speed only kills when there are idiots who don't know how to handle it & speed in the wrong place. Why do F1 drivers drive at over 200mph & not kill? Because they know what they are doing & can handle it. Saying speed kills on its own, is nonsense. More attention should be given to drink drivers.

They used to get killed quite regularly and certyainly were not idiots, until Sir Jackie Stewart and others decided that enough was enough and went on a huge safety drive which resulted in much safer cars and circuits.
But as usual, the thread has drifted quite a long way off topic Off Topic

Like on the road, perhaps? Rolling Eyes Do us a favour and let us know where it is that you speed without idiocy and handle it knowingly.

If this was in reference to my post then I must apologise - it was very VERY tongue in cheek!
