Hi,
I want to create a custom group of POIs containing around 900 items - I have the addresses and postcodes for each point, so is it possible to locate each one using MapSource and then upload them to the device as a POI? I know its possible to upload each one as a Waypoint, but I don't really want to take over the majority of the waypoint capacity with these items....
Apologies if this doesn't make a great deal of sense - its friday and its been Beer O'Clock for several hours! _________________ Nuvi 765T, CoPilot on iPhone....

Only a partial reply at the moment - I've used Mapsource in the past to create and download POI files, so I'm sure you won't have a problem there.
What I can't answer offhand is how to prepare your input file as a whole, rather than load each of the 900 individually. If you've sorted that then no problem.
Otherwise either I'll (hopefully) think of something or, more likely, more knowledgeable punters will come to the rescue - what is your source data format (info fields, asc/csv/... etc)? _________________ David

Are they all unrelated POIs that you have built up over time, or are they a 'set' (eg Caravan Club sites, or whatever) that you may be able to find on a POI site and download (such as PGPSW's own ones here, but there are a number of others)? They are often free. _________________ David

They are all a set - I've had a very very good trawl around, but can't find anything on the Web to indicate that it already exists - its the individual sites of a youth organisation I'm a staff member of.
The plan is to get this created, and then feed it out to interested parties around the country... _________________ Nuvi 765T, CoPilot on iPhone....

Hi RV
Maybe the following will help and may work in your case.
Not sure how big a 900 point file will be (and watch those GPS unit limits) but my one has only 30 points and shows as 2K in Explorer.
I have an older Streepilot 2720 which, you may know, can only recognise wav files.
If you have travelled by air, you may have been bemused as I have been, by the people who jump up as soon as the aircraft has landed, rummaging for their luggage despite being told to stay in their seats (sorry if anyone reading this is a rummager - but it is very amusing watching you guys)!
Based on that experience, I have created a set called "Safety_Msgs" using MapSource mainly to amuse the family/kids and also hopefully brainwash them into thinking safety when travelling with others.
To put it simply, it is a set of waypoints which triggers a wav file of the same name created by a text reader which says " Attention: For your own safety, please do not undo your seatbelt or open any door until the vehicle comes to to halt".
Using Mapsource, I created the various waypoints say, about 1/2 a mile before the actual arrival waypoints (Favourites - eg Uncle Ben's house, etc).
In your case of course, you would place the Waypoints at the correct location.
In New File - MapSource, when creating a new Waypoint:
(Sorry if you already know this)
1] Create a Waypoint at the required location on MapSource
Waypoint Properties box will open.
2] Give each one the name you require.
3] Chose the Symbol you require.
4] Untick the Proximity box and put in the proximity at which you want the arrival message to play. Otherwise leave the box ticked.
5] Fill in the Details of the Waypoint in the Comment box -Tel Number, short address, etc.
6] In the Display dropdown box, choose the option to show Symbol only - unless you want the name also, but I find that this will clutter up the screen.
7] Press OK to save that Waypoint
Back to Step 1] for the next one.
It can be a bit of a job especially if you are going to input 900.
When you have finished entering all the waypoints, save the the file using "Save As" in Mapsource, in your example, "Caravan Site.GPX" to the POI/Caravan Site/ directory on your PC.
(GPX is in the "Save as Type" the dropdown list.)
If you want to attach a sound file, it should also be called "Caravan Site.wav/mp3" - you do not have to attach a sound file - in which case at least my unit will say "Arriving at Caravan Site on ....(right/left)" (ie saying the name of the file).
Once tha file has been created and saved in the GPX format, it can be uploaded to the GPS using POI Loader like any other POI.
As I said before, be careful of the GPS POI limits especially if you also load others, like cameras, shopping, etc, etc.
On my 2720 I can call up the waypoints by pressing "Where To" and then "Extras" then "Custom POIs" then finding "Caravan Site" directory and "Caravan Site" file. Pressing on the file will open a list of all the waypoints you created. Pressing on any waypoint will then allow you to see that waypoint on the screen.
On the actual GPS map, you will be able to see the symbol you chose as the various locations come into the picture.
Hope the above is helpfull. It works for me anyway...
Best Regards
CDK
