|
|
We've just received a new ZyCast Bluetooth GPS in for review from our friends at GPSForLess.
The ZyCast SG-288 is unusual in also sporting a small blue backlit 4 line LCD display that displays Time, Date, Latitude, Longitude, Altitude and Speed.
Looking not unlike a small compact mobile phone the SG-288 sports the now ubiquitous SiRFStarIII Chipset and initial impressions of its sensitivity are excellent with satellite lock being achieved indoors fresh out of the box in under 20 seconds. No mean feat when other SiRFStarIII Bluetooth GPS units I have struggle to achieve a lock at all in the same location.
Other features are a 1200 mAh Li-ion rechargeable and user replaceable battery, WAAS/EGNOS support and flash based firmware which can be updated by the user.
A full review will be forthcoming shortly.

Slashgear have syndicated this review, a bit naughty as they never asked but at least due credit is given. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Darren,
Does the unit only show Lat / Long or can it do OSGB grid refs?
It would be a wonderful device to have on a walk if it did. You could have it on all the time (great battery life) and occasionally put your Memory Map PDA on to get visual check against the paper map. _________________ Phil |

Sadly curretnly it will only display Lat/Lon. We have however passed on this as a suggestion/request to the manufacturers. The unit is upgradable so it might be possible to implement. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Simply awesome GPS, turned it on after I got and within 30 seconds on the counter in my kitchen it latched up to 10 sats with no problem. When I turned it off for a while (2 hours) and moved to another part of the house and turned back on it took less than 20 seconds to latch up to the GPS sats. Great product glad I bought one! |

Glad you like it, it's now firmly my favourite BT GPS and the one I always have with me. Love it. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Darren,
Anyone know what happened to the ZyCast SG-288? I can't seem to find one for sale anywhere, and can't find it on the manufacturer's website.
Did it evaporate for some reason?
In the absense of the SG-288, is the Holux GPslim 236 (or maybe the 240) back to being your favorite receiver?
Thanks.

It was superceded by the SG-289 although that too appears to now be discontinued. _________________ Darren Griffin |
