Hallo clever cloggses out there. Does anybody know how to change map names? TomTom GO maps.
Just for devilment, I have four maps on one device (all legal, just previous versions brought forward). Problem is, three of them are called Western Europe when I go to switch maps to play with them. Right now, I know which entry is which map, but I can foresee a time in the future (like 10 minutes from now) when I forget which is which and spend half a day switching maps and looking at versions to get the right one running (I don't know about anybody else, Switch Map takes an age on my device). _________________ Dennis

Could you not do it by going into the map folder (mines is GB and ROI). then there is 4 files with one of them a .toc file. If you right click it and rename it this might change the name of the map. Otherwise it might be one of the other three (if possible) but one os the activation something or another so i dont think it is that. Might be worth a look. _________________ NEW Tomtom GO 500 (hope it is good)

In each map folder there is a Map_Name.pna. If you change the first line you can change the entry that appears on the Manage Maps menu.
You'll need to do the edit on a PC and change the file attributes from Read Only. Keep a copy of the original _________________ Jock

In addition to what BFG said, you should also change the name of the directory (folder in modern parlance) to the same as what you make the first line in the .pna file. For instance, I have directories on my SDHC card called Western_Europe_705 and Western_Europe_710. _________________ Tim |

Thanks, BGF and Tim, but it hasn't worked.
Each one has first line "ID=Western_Europe.pna". I have changed one to Western_Europe_660 and another to Western_Europe_650 and the folders to correspond. I didn't need to change the attributes.
But they all still only show up as Western Europe (space, no underscore). I tried one as Western_Europe660, omitting an underscore, but to no avail. Then I had this brilliant brainwave and changed the filename of the pna file also to Western_Europe_660.pna. The maps didn't show up at all!
Maybe it's different for such old maps? But I can't see any difference for the 705 and 710 maps .pna files.
(if1977 I don't have a .toc file at all) _________________ Dennis

Dennis-
I've changed the names of the North American maps for v650, 652, 660, and 665 successfully, so I don't think it has anything to do with them being "old" maps.
What program are you using? Notepad has worked fine for me. Maybe stupid, but you did remember to save the changes, right? And no returns after the name? |

No idea why it doesn't work for you! I have two UK maps on a ONE XL. One is version 675 and the other is version 710.
They are in their own directories, named
United_Kingdom_and_Republic_of_Ireland_675
and
United_Kingdom_and_Republic_of_Ireland_710.
Each one has a .pna file named
United_Kingdom_and_Republic_of_Ireland.pna (no changes made to this name) and the first line of this file has been altered to suit the directory name. i.e.
ID=United_Kingdom_and_Republic_of_Ireland_675.pna
and
ID=United_Kingdom_and_Republic_of_Ireland_710.pna
As can be seen from the screenshot below, the directories are shown up as
United_Kingdom_and_Republic_of_Ireland_6...
and
United_Kingdom_and_Republic_of_Ireland_7...
Tapping and holding on the name reveals its full name but I can't get a screenshot of this. _________________ Tim |

It's surprising what toast and green marmalade can do. I had done everything absolutely correctly as you all said, and then lost the maps, lost files, you name it. device locking up, hair tearing out etc, etc. Then after the T & GM, came back and looked, fired up again and they are all showing correctly!
Next time I get man flu, I'll try T & GM to see if it'll cure that!!
Thank you everybody. You were all correct. Somehow I managed to get it wrong, then right.
Bath time - see you later. _________________ Dennis

| Tim,
just to be clear, you say "the directories are shown up as ...". Am I correct that it is not showing the Directory name, but the name from the .PNA? If you leave the Directory name as is, but you change the "ID=United_Kingdom_and_Republic_of_Ireland_675.pna"
to
"ID=UK_and_RoI_675.pna", then UK_and_RoI_675 is what you see on the Manage Maps menu? _________________ Jock

Changing the first line in the pna file was the only thing I had to change to make the version number appear. There is no need to change names of any files or directories to make a different name appear on the 'change maps' list. Changing other bits may have stopped it working.
Must remember the toast next time I get a problem. _________________ Gerry

There you go, see - we all do it! Accuracy is paramount and you forgot the Green Marmalade. It wouldn't have worked!! And yes, it's a racing certainty I didn't get it quite right at first - must have missed or included a space or underscore.
Do you reckon the abbreviated titles work (just from the first line of the .pna file), as wondered by BGF? I daren't try it with mine just yet.
PS - I'm rewarding myself with a Stella after all this sweat! _________________ Dennis

Yes - The TomTom displays whatever you choose in the .pna file: ID="Map Name".pna
You don't need to rename anything else, though I find it helpful to rename the folder to match the .pna file, just so I don't get confused. |
