Hi

I'm looking to by myself a sav nav system for the 1st time, now i don't travel too much so looking at entryish level.

I think i'd like one with a wide screen and probaly narrowed down my choice to like the TomTom One Xl or the Navman S50

Both are similar in terms of features with the Navman having advantage you can use bluetooth with phone for hands free.

Now i'm confused as some reviews say TomTom One Xl is good and others say it's not. Not seen a review for the S50 but seen one for the S30 which got a gold rating. Confused

Don't focus too much on reviews, especially if they aren't from experts in this domain. Any twit can take a navigator for a spin around the block and write a review, and many do. It takes someone whos been doing it a while (One of the PGPS team for instance), to really pick up on the important detail.

Personally I would go for Tom Tom over the S series. Theres been a couple of posts that indicate the S series may not be problem free - it's completely new software. Look at the comapanys track records for post sales support, as this is likely to be more important than a few bells and whistles. Find out what updates will cost, and how often they will be avilible etc.

Hi Robert:

Whilst I agree with your comments regarding reviews, I must take issue with the one regarding problems with the S Series. I cannot find a single post regarding problems. A look a the Tom Tom forum however shows a multitude of major problems with some of their newer models. Some people appear to be on their 3rd or fourth replacement unit. Tom Tom customers seem to be a much more tolerant crowd than the NavMan ones. I have to be fair though and point out that most of the issues seem to be with the x20 series and the x10 before that rather than the One XL.

I am having serious re-route issues with my Navman s90i, to the point where I pull over stop and allow it to re-route (which it then does within 1 min - otherwise it can take miles, often)

Others have the same problem

However, a friend has an s50 and doesn't seem to have the same issue

Either way Navman are working on a patch for release in a few weeks time, which I am promised will solve the issue

this problem is really annoying me with the S series, which as this post rightly said, is completely re-invented software

I'm sticking with it however, as visually and vocally the units navigation is spot on, and much better imho than the TomTom (which I also have)

Speaker is also very loud, mount superb, and ease of use great

Removed all my custom POIs today and guess what - my Navman s90i worked like a dream. No slow menu response, no sticky maps, no problem re-routing

Running on Navmans directions speed camera database now and all is well!

Well i got a S50 and took it for a run and re routing was quite quick and other wise i'm quite statisfied.

The only issue i noticed between this and a tomtom one which i have used of a friend before is it take a little longer picking up you location, but it's not massive. Once you got your signal works like a dream although i have not been through a tunnel or the like to see if signal get lost and gets picked up quick.

I'm sure on my long journey to south wales towmorrow that might get tested.

I'm happy and the bluetooth phone connection is an added bonus.

Definately - it was just the custom POIs which was causing the problem. My s90i has run perfectly since removing them

While perhaps the TomTom has more custom options, the Navman is more straight forward, more focused, and well, just nicer!
