I have a new HP hx2495 pocket PC. I already had a Garmin 276C GPS receiver. I want to get GPS travel information on my pocket PC. The Garmin outputs NMEA 0183 on its USB, but the pocket PC has a funny connector and no normal USB port. I have some general questions.

Question 1, what kind of cable or adapter do I need to get the Garmin info into the pocket PC?

Question 2, what software do I need to run on the PC to display the Garmin GPS data?

Question 3, instead of hauling around two devices, are there smaller bundled GPS receiver/software packages I can buy?

These are newbie questions, I know. But I can't find the answers at the garmin or HP websites. Thanks.

1) No can do. Both devices are USB clients, and cannot talk to each other.

2) none (see answer 1)

3) All you need is a Bluetooth GPS receiver, and then you have a vast choice of navigation programs to use on your iPAQ.

According to the manual, the 276C has two serial ports, each of which has a range of user selectable I/O protocols including NMEA in / NMEA out. Assuming your HP supports a serial interface, you can connect the two devices as follows:

standard HP serial cable (DB9F) to DB9M-to-DB9M NULL MODEM connector to standard Garmin serial cable (DB9F), or

(probably off-brand) DB9M serial cable for HP to standard Garmin serial cable, or

standard HP serial cable to (off-brand) DB9M Garmin serial cable, or

suitable pair of cables from PC-Mobile.

Set the Garmin to NMEA, choose the appropriate COM port from your application on the HP, and off you go. I do this all the while using a 60CSx and a Toshiba e800, third option for cabling.

I use Anquet with OS mapping here in the UK, and have used Fugawi World Explorer in Australia with the NATMAP 1:250000 Premium Raster mapping. MemoryMap also has a good reputation but I have not used it. You can use Garmin mapping by downloading Que-for-GPS10 from the Garmin website and setting it up to take input from a COM port, but that requires GARMIN rather than NMEA protocol. You will see the same mapping as on your 276C in that case, but of course you can set different displays on the two devices, or even display two different Garmin products.
