Hello all,
Is there any news about the upgrade for 2210 or any WM2003 users to 2003 SE?
Thanks in advance.

Plenty of rumour and conjecture but nothing firm from HP. The bush telegraph reckons Mid June. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Yeah, right! Can you see HP giving it away? A pint for you if you're right, though. _________________ Tim |

Latest Bush Telegraph (or HP forums) suggests late July/early August - after the new iPAQs with SE pre-installed are released.
A price of 19.99 USD has also been suggested.
As yet, no official announcement from HP despite many calls for information. _________________ Ian.

If it finishes up being a chargeable upgrade, I can't see many people bothering. To my understanding, apart from some further tweaks to Internet Explorer, the built-in applications are unchanged in functionality.
So far as I can understand, the main feature added is better screen support (which includes landscape support in the built-in applications) - this is both the addition of easy landscape / portrait switching and support for screens other than 200 by 320 portrait.
The other interesting feature is that 2003SE apparently has support for WPA on wireless networks.
2003SE is a "nice to have" on an existing device, but unless you really want landscape capabilities or WPA, I suspect many people won't bother if you have to pay. After all, you can't fit a VGA screen to an existing iPAQ!
My impression is that many people didn't bother with the upgrade from 2002 to 2003 on devices that could undergo that upgrade. Some that did that upgrade landed up wondering whether it was worth bothering (I believe it was, though the charge for iPAQ Pocket PC 2003 upgrades was very steep in Europe).
If HP land up charging US$20 in the States, I hope that the policy on the 2002 to 2003 upgrades is not repeated. They cost something like US$25 in the States, and around £42 over here by the time you'd added VAT and shipping.
The only benchmark we have so far is that apparently Toshiba have released a 2003SE ROM for the e800 free of charge. Of course, the e800, being a VGA screen device, was the existing Pocket PC crying out most for the upgrade, as the original 2003 release doesn't really support the VGA screen that well.

Found this on the HP website:
Quote: | HP is pleased to announce that it will support MS Windows Mobile 2003 SE on new products planned for launch in 2H2004. After extensive assessments of MS Windows Mobile 2003 SE support on current products HP has decided not to offer this upgrade on existing product platforms. However, HP will provide users with a more secure experience through the use of WiFi Protected Access Support (WPA) on selected models.

Yup, as has been extensively reported elsewhere, HP are abandoning any prosepct of WM2003SE upgrades for existing models. It's a shame and their excuses regarding ROM size are laughable but I very much doubt they'll change their minds now. _________________ Darren Griffin |
