uk postcode data

There are lots of references on this site to uk postcode data and some excellent routines (e.g. digitools) that convert postcodes to co-ordinates recognised by software such as Tom-Tom.

My question is where can I get the underlying data without paying for it? Where do all these developers get it from? I need to convert postocdes (just London) to Lat & Lon coordinates for importing to a map.

Any pointers gratefully received.
