Yet Another Speed Camera Targeted By Vandals

Article by: rob brady

Another speed camera has been attacked by vandals, this time in Stalybridge, Greater Manchester.

The Gatso camera was badly damaged after a tyre was placed around it and set alight, but there was no recording equipment within the casing at the time - recording equipment is often rotated between many casings to save costs.

The blaze was so fierce that is reportedly took 20 minutes to extinguish by the local Stalybridge fire brigade.

A spokeswoman Transport for Greater Manchester commented: "Safety cameras have no purpose other than to reduce the incidence of speeding vehicles and reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured on the roads. Unfortunately, mindless criminals have decided to attack this piece of valuable road safety equipment."

She continued "It is hoped that the damage is not too extensive and repairs can be arranged without too much of a delay."

The camera had caught 140 speeding drivers since 2008.

At an average of only 35 'catches' per year, I wonder if it is realy worth the expense of repairing. Rolling Eyes

140 x £60 = £8400. Hasn't even paid for itself the first time yet, let alone the repair costs!

But isn't it there for the safety aspect - cost doesn't come in to it. Shocked Rolling Eyes

How? By taking money off people who speed and kill and seriously injure people? I don't think that would work. But then some of us think they have no purpose other than to take money in. Rolling Eyes

One more useless piece of street furniture destroyed. Hopefully they will not replace it and improve the view!
How would they charge the miscreants? Criminal damage or potential loss of income?

Three cameras on the A68 have been "removed" too. All three have been cut off on the horizontal bar somehow. The internal cabling is still visible.

Gatso: 74 now gone the same way - camera cut off the stand using a disc cutter or something. So far only one of these "removed" cameras have been replaced. Rolling Eyes
