Traffic Media UK - iPhone Traffic Monitoring App

Article by: Darren Griffin
Date: 18 Dec 2009

pocketgpsworld.comTraffic Media UK is an iPhone app, and one that offers access to regional traffic radio reports and Motorway network cameras. It doesn't use GPS but for anyone planning a long journey over the holiday break it might prove useful.

Using a simple map interface you can hear reports for your region and look at still photos from motorway cameras to check traffic and, given the current snow, weather conditions.

Currently Traffic Radio is only available for England but Alerts are available for the whole of the UK. You can choose which alerts you wish to receive and at £1.19 it's cheap and simple solution that works well.

For more information see the Traffic Media web site at www.trafficmediauk.com or download from the iTunes Appstore here.

Traffic Cameras 'were' working when I posted the news item, albeit my local ones were covered in snow!

But they stopped later and are still off-line. They do state that camera images will occasionally be unavailable due to operational reasons.

As the cameras were the best feature, being able to check if roads were snow free for instance, their absence makes the app rather less value.

I was sure there was a TrafficMaster type app but can't for the life of me! However UK Traffic or Traffic i UK are both good starts.

It's called Trafficmaster Companion SmartNav, but I wouldn't recommend it, based on the beta.

My personal favourite is TrafficTV, which shows a map and when speeds drop below 20mph. It also has cameras, but I find the speeds of most use.

I use 'Traffic UK' which is really compitent as you can also change the internet source data. I'am currently using BBC traffic feed.

If traffic master has one of these feeds then you could plumb into it as well!

At last! I've been following your web-site updates. Typical of my luck that the day after I downloaded it the camera service disappeared.

Glad to hear they are back.
