A $234 speeding ticket has been overturned by a Seattle court because of wordy signage.

A driver took on the city when he was flashed going through a 20mph area near a school. He argued that the warning sign contained too many words and was therefore confusing.

The sign contained five separate boxes reading 'SCHOOL', 'SPEED LIMIT 20', 'WHEN CHILDREN ARE PRESENT' and 'OR WHEN FLASHING' and 'PHOTO ENFORCED'.

Mr. Jason Canfield from Washington said: "It's definitely something that impacts your reaction time, because you need time to see a sign, react to it, and then hit the brakes and slow down. It takes quite a while to do that."

It has been reported that this decision will not necessarily have a bearing on previous tickets issued at the camera site.

The process cost Mr. Canfield approximately $800 - he only won on appeal.
