Speed and Alcohol Blamed for Death Crash

29-year-old Vasta Odedra died in his car after it ended up in a ditch and burst into flames on the A337 in Everton, near Milford-on-Sea, Hampshire.
The accident happened just after 3.00am on May 29th - shortly after his white Volvo V40 was caught by a speed camera going through roadworks on the M3 near Farnborough.
Hampshire police said Mr. Odedra's speed between the camera and the crash site would have averaged over 80mph.
The previous day, Mr. Odedra drunk vodka with friends in London, but left early the next morning to embark on the 117-mile journey home to Milford-on-Sea.
An inquest heard that at the time of the crash he was around 1.8 times over the legal drink drive limit.

At 3am, 80mph would have been a perfectly acceptable speed if he wasn't drunk on vodka. So what's their point?

Hence calls for vehicles to be fitted with some sort of monitor that prevents their operation when the driver is impaired. However I'm at a loss to think of anything that cannot be fooled by a third party setting the vehicle up for another driver, or that cannot be by-passed.

You could always fit a probe & sensor to the seat base

Well a reaction speed test might be possible, but this seems a bit extreme. Mind you, it would be difficult for an impaired driver to persuade anyone else to 'sit in' for them for this test.

I'm not a local to Everton, but it appears the speed limit on the A337 there is 30mph. 80mph would NEVER be acceptable there. In a 30mph limit area, other road users, especially pedestrians, have a right to expect drivers to stay under the speed limit. Unless, of course, we are saying that it is perfectly UNacceptable for pedestrians to be out and about at 3am?

Your troll trumps mine.
I didn't do the research and had assumed that the A337 was a 60mph dual carriage way. I had also assumed/fantasised that the restriction would have been put in place due to the Road-Cone-Putter-Outerers doing their job only for the Road Repairers not to be visibly Repairing. Thus the frustration of a reduced speed limit for no apparent reason.
My bad, sheer laziness on my behalf, you win that hand.

But the report says:

The camera was on the M3 near Farnborough which is around 64 miles from Everton, 48 of which are on motorways, so he may well have been doing considerably more than 80mph on the motorways and considerably less when he crashed.
I'm not suggesting his speed was acceptable, far from it, just that he probably wasn't doing 80mph in a 30mph limit.
Does my troll trump Dennis's?

Condolences to Mr Odedra's family and friends.
I think that one thing that this incident proves is that cameras are not always the best answer as most cameras can only do a single function, i.e. speed check, whereas a police officer may have picked up on erratic driving (at even below the legal limit) and might have stopped the vehicle before the accident.
