SatNav Error Driver Sentenced

Following on from our story of earlier this month "SatNav Error Blamed For Cyclist's Death", motorist Steven Conlan has been sentenced.

Conlan hit and killed cyclist, 55-year-old Grahame McGregor.

Conlan placed the blame on his satnav saying that it recalibrated itself just before the crossroads where the incident occurred having given a wrong instruction and then it failed to register the upcoming junction.

The District Judge, Roger Elsey, apparently agreed with the defendant, saying the tragedy would not have happened if the satnav was switched off. This would appear to put the blame, at least partially, on the satnav.

Nevertheless, perhaps unsurprisingly, the judge accepted the driver was ultimately at fault and sentenced Conlan to a 12-month community penalty comprising 240 hours of unpaid work. He was also banned from driving for two years.

The court heard that Conlan was of good character, behaved responsibly following the accident and had shown genuine remorse.

Not enough IMO. Should have had time in prison, not just a driving ban Twisted Evil

A bit like saying an air crash wouldn't have happened if the aircraft had not been in the air.

I sometimes wonder about our esteemed judiciary and which planet they are on/from. Definitely not planet earth.

Regards,

Len

I didn't realise you could do an 'Instruments Only' driving test now. I still tend to use 'visual driving rules' myself. When are people going to stop blaming everything else for their own bad driving?

I'm off to Scotland shortly, maybe I should give the 'Instruments Only' approach a try, I certainly can't be done for speeding if I can't see the instruments Rolling Eyes
