RIM acquires Dash Navigation
Research In Motion, owners of Blackberry have acquired Dash Navigation of an undisclosed sum.
Dash first became known as manufacturers of a connected PND that shared its location and speed with other Dash devices to form a mesh network and thereby share traffic speed data.
Although novel in its implementation it failed to sell enough units to make the this system viable.
We reported back in November of last year that they were laying off staff and pulling out of the consumer navigation market to concentrate on licensing their technology and services to other manufacturers instead.
Quite what plans RIM has for Dash is unknown. The primary appeal is the mesh connectivity and we can only hope that Blackberry look to further develop this with a view to integrating it within the Blackberry product, perhaps a Blackberry Enterprise Server bolt-on allowing tracking and other data sharing?
