Just one in five of the 169 fixed speed cameras across Scotland were operating for a full week in June according to figures released under a freedom of information request.

This is a significant reduction from one in three cameras that were working back in 2011.

Of the eight Scottish Safety Camera Partnerships only four run fixed speed cameras - the other four authorities only run mobile cameras.

The North East Safety Camera Partnership have 25 safety camera sites, but only five were operational during the reported week.

Strathclyde hosts 63 cameras with only 15 operational, whilst Lothian and Borders have 67, but just 11 active. Across Tayside only 3 cameras out of the 14 cameras in situ were reported active.

A spokesman for Scotland's safety camera partnerships argued that whether the cameras were on or off, the deterrence effect was maintained as motorists cannot determine which are active and which were not.

He also said that the reason the percentage of active cameras are lower at the moment is because safety camera partnerships are in the process of updating the film in the cameras to digital. He added that the work should be completed within the next month.
