A taxi driver has paid a heavy price for attempting to pervert the course of justice by trying to blame others for his speeding convictions.

Horatiu Balea, 33, was caught on two occasions whilst driving his licensed cab in the Crawley, West Sussex area. He then tried to lay the blame on two other drivers, one in Spain and one in Romania, but a simple check of the speed camera photos revealed that Balea was indeed the driver.

He pleaded guilty to both offences at Lewes Crown Court where he received two concurrent six-month prison sentences, suspended for two years and was disqualified from driving for three months. He was also ordered to pay £400 in costs and carry out 200 hours' unpaid work.

A spokesman for Sussex Police commented: "Balea's ridiculous attempt to evade speeding fines with lies and deceit have ultimately led to a greater punishment. A licensed and designated taxi or private hire vehicle may only be driven by a permitted driver and his false claims that other people were driving at the time of the speeding offences just served to raise suspicion against him."

Balea's taxi licence is currently being reviewed.
