M60 Speed Cameras Up And Running
Article by: rob brady Date: 26 Mar 2015
The M60 speed cameras that were installed five months ago, are finally operative. There was some doubt as to their legality, hence the long delay.
A Queen's Counsel had warned Greater Manchester Police that a regulation order connected to the cameras was worded incorrectly and, if challenged by a ticketed driver, the prosecution would fail.
Although both the Greater Manchester Police and the Highways Agency at first said they were satisfied that the original order adequately met requirements, the police asked the Highways Agency to revise the order to address the concerns.
The speed cameras were originally fully operational, but none of the hundreds of motorists who were caught were prosecuted.
The average speed cameras monitor a 17 mile, 50 mph stretch of motorway from Junction 8 to Junction 20 of the M62 - from Stretford to Rochdale within the Greater Manchester area. They will police the area during road works connected to the smart motorway scheme due for completion autumn 2017.
A Highways Agency spokesman commented: "Narrow lanes are now in place on most of the smart motorway route and our information shows that the vast majority of drivers are sticking to the temporary speed limit. We are doing everything we can to keep the impact of the work to a minimum and intend to keep all of the lanes on the motorway open during the day for the entire smart motorway project."
