Government Approves New Speed Camera Roll Out

Whilst numerous areas in the UK have seen speed cameras switched off during recent months, a new roll out of cameras has been approved by the Government - with Bedford one of the first places to "benefit".
According to reports, portable average speed cameras will be introduced to the area in a bid to improve road safety. The cameras will monitor the average speed of motorists over set distances and be fixed to lampposts.
This is hoped to address concerns currently raised against fixed point cameras - which are often tarred as being ineffective as motorists simply slow down when passing them and speed up again afterwards.
Whether this introduction of portable average cameras will become a national scheme remains to be seen but, if successful, it is likely towns and cities across the UK could see the way their speed is monitored drastically altered.

I find it mildly amusing that, within the first 20 seconds of the video, a cyclist is filmed cycling on the wrong side of the road.

Don't want to detract from the OP, but on the Source link there is mention of Lola cars going into administration. I didn't know that, good racing heritage and a shame.

I'm assuming that if they work in a similar fashion to the SPECs, then they are capable of working 24/7/365.

Notice the commentary which says they are small cameras, on top of lamp posts, so drivers won't know where they are.
Changing the policy of visibility are we?

This does raise a few points:
- Calibration of the system, i.e every time that it is moved, it needs to have an accurate measurement of the distance between each camera location.
- Calibration certification of the system - will the operators be able to provide acceptable evidence of Calibration?
- As DennisN says, it's hidden cameras: Visible cameras slow vehicles down much better than invisible ones.
- Security, if the cameras are on street furniture such as lampposts, what's to stop some joker from stealing them, or just damaging them with a long pole?
- How will we list them in the PocketGPSWorld camera database? I guess list them as mSPECs but in the standard SPECS files/POIs.
