Google temporarily suspends Map Maker

Google has suspended its Map Maker map editing service following a series of abuses.

Several edits, including an Android mascot that was shown urinating on an Apple logo, have forced the company to withdraw the service whilst they consider how better to protect the service from abuse whilst still allowing users to submit corrections and make edits.

Until the suspension Map Maker relied on trusted reviewers and users to moderate edits and reports but the system has proved inadequate in preventing hacks and prank edits.

The urinating android is easy to spot, but who knows how much other more subtle mischief has been done by user edits? It might only be revealed when someone's sat nav takes them somewhere inadvisable.

The edit I'd like to see is stronger definition, white roads on a pale grey background, what were Google Map designers thinking?

Just tried navigating on a cycle using a HTC 1 Android phone using Google Maps and it was impossible to read the map, especially with sunglasses on. In the end had to change to CycleStreets, which is a free mapping route app and absolutely clear (if less user-friendly)

The person who depicted Android urinating on Apple's mapping was at least, accurate...;-)
