Garmin surprised everyone this week with the announcement of a new member of its action camera line-up.

The VIRB 360 is a rugged, waterproof, 360-degree action camera capable of 5.7k/30fps and an astounding 4k spherical stabilisation. The VIRB 360 specs beat it's nearest competitor, the long awaited and widely praised Nikon KeyMission 360, hands down.

It's an impressive first outing and will set the standard that others now have to beat but it's no bargain, a list price of $800USD is more than double that of the Nikon.

Spec highlights are GPS (GPS & GLONASS naturally) and a raft of sensors including barometer and altimeter that allow you to create customisable G-Metrix overlays onto captured video in 36-degree augmented reality. You can also pair compatible Garmin sensors to add more data.

VIRB 360 also supports voice commands, "OK Garmin, start recording" or "remember that" to tag a specific moment. You can even change recording modes or power the camera down. Live streaming to YouTube and Facebook is there. And it is waterproof down to 10 meters.

If you're an action junkie then this will surely be the must have 360-camera of 2017.
