Lockheed Martin is in full production building GPS III – the latest generation of GPS satellites. The company’s second GPS III satellite has now completed assembly and is preparing for environmental testing, and the third satellite is close behind, having just received its navigation payload.

These next generation satellites have three times better accuracy and up to eight times improved anti-jamming capabilities. Spacecraft life will extend to 15 years, 25 percent longer than the newest GPS satellites on-orbit today.

It's unique design includes a flexible, modular architecture allowing for the insertion of new technology as it becomes available in the future or if the mission needs change. Satellites based off this design are already compatible with both the Air Force’s next generation Operational Control System (OCX) and the existing GPS constellation.
