New average speed cameras, on the A6 Preston on the stretch between Capitol Centre at Winery Lane and Albyn Street East, will begin operation today.
These point-to-point cameras lead the way for a further seven camera systems planned for Lancashire.
They will monitor routes where, in just under six years, 13 people died in collisions and 62 suffered serious or life changing injuries.
Lancashire Constabulary's Assistant Chief Constable Tim Jacques said: "We simply don't want to catch motorists speeding. We know that during our test phase over the past few weeks, an average of 100 motorists a day would have been detected speeding by the cameras."
County Councillor John Fillis commented: "The evidence from elsewhere in the UK strongly suggests that average speed cameras will help to tackle this problem, and I look forward to seeing the difference they will make."
