Essex speed cameras are to receive an upgrade following an approval of over a million pounds in funding.

Essex County Council has given the go-ahead for half of the camera network to be converted from old-fashioned wet-film to digital.

They say that as a result of this move their road safety budget would see a reduction of 94 per cent by March 2016, a saving of £800,000.

In a report to county hall it states that "This technology is fast becoming obsolete and because of the difficulty in getting spares, it is becoming increasingly challenging to keep the equipment in an operational state."

If the council tax payers were asked to vote on this spending I wonder what the decision would be.

As a resident of Essex, I for one would not sanction the spend at all, I would use the money to fund more traffic police.

A ticking off by a uniformed officer has a much longer lasting effect & is better fir road safety overall.
