Drivers Win Right To Share Speedcam Site information

Back in June 2014, we reported that motorists in France who shared camera locations on Facebook, were shocked to receive summonses telling them they were due in court in Rodez, Aveyron in September. Thirteen were found guilty, but following an appeal, the convictions have now been quashed.

Lawyers argued that the original verdict was not only an attack on the freedom of speech, but also an attack on devices that provide speed camera alerts.

Using speed camera alerts is illegal in France, but drivers can be warned of "danger zones" where there may be a speed camera.

Lawyer Rémy Josseaume, who acted for 11 out of the 13 defendants told Le Figaro: "It gives a new balance between what is accepted by the authorities and the instant reactions of road users."

He added: "It would have been unjust for the authorities to allow driving aids (which give a very general alert of camera sites) and yet forbid Facebook pages which do exactly the same thing."

I've not seen the Facebook pages concerned, does anybody know how accurate the positions were?

When I first read the article, I thought that the French authorities may have seen sense and allowed speed camera alerts but I guess that things are still the same.

Due to ferry problems in Jersey and the other Channel Islands, Bo Peep and I had an unexpected 510 km (320 miles) drive from Saint Malo to Calais a few days ago which introduced me to driving on the wrong side of the road Wink. CamerAlert is very useful! Thumbs Up
