Bristol Speed Cameras Off Until At Least April

Back in December 2013, Bristol's Mayor, George Ferguson announced that fixed speed cameras would be switched back on early in 2014.
Bristol City's speed and red light cameras were switched off following the government's decision to end Safety Camera Partnership funding back in 2011.
However, it has now been announced that not only are the cameras still inoperative, but they will not be switched back on until at least April - more than a year after the initial announcement.
All cameras are to be "removed, examined and tested" before resuming service.
It is reported that Bristol's city cabinet will only be discussing the reactivation in April, presumably to give them the final go-ahead. The council will be funding the initiative from its own reserves.

But please be aware that the Variable Speed cameras on the M4 and M5 around Bristol, which were switched on in June 2014, are monitoring 24/7 for 70mph when there is no lower limit posted. ITV local news tonight reported that 5,548 drivers were caught over 70mph between June and November 2014. The RAC apparently say it's not fair and there should be publicity about them - to which the police responded that everybody should know the national speed limit is 70mph.
AND Bristol (local elected) Mayor George Ferguson (he of the red trousers) did NOT know that the city's fixed cameras have still not been switched on in accordance with his 2013 announcement - said he'd be looking into it. Don't you just love these fingers-on-the-pulse people?

I think it is worth noting that although the cameras were switched off, there was no effort to remove them from the roadside. Indeed, Avon and Somerset police wanting to turn them on again, say that in their area there is a couple of million pounds of cameras deteriorating at the roadside. There have never been cameras inside all camera boxes, but we always react as if there are. How many drivers knew the cameras were switched off?

Surely it would have been common knowledge locally that the Avon and Somerset safety camera partnership, which ran the cameras, was disbanded and the fixed cameras turned off?
I'm sure I would know if the Peterborough cameras were switched off - people talk about this sort of stuff.

Well, I'm locally and I'd heard it. But do you trust what you hear when there's a bloody great big yellow box at the side of the road looking like it's just waiting to send you a fine and three points in the post?
And of all the cameras in Peterborough, a percentage have no cameras in them at any given time - "they" don't have as many cameras as they have boxes, so they swap them around. How do you fancy chancing your licence on the wrong ones?

I'm with you on that one Dennis and do my best to keep to the speed limits but I think if it were common knowledge that cameras were off then many drivers would let their speed drift over the limit where it was safe to do so, perhaps 35 in a 30 at 3am?

HoHo, don't get me started on "drift over the limit". There's no such thing.
But it's safe as houses to do 100 in a 20 school zone at 3am! (But only in a Beamer).

Sorry, I can't spare the time for the full bit right now. For the present, suffice it to say that the theory goes along the lines of "drifting over the limit" is only applicable to habitual deliberate speeders. (Especially in black German cars - or rather German black cars).

I went to Bristol yesterday. I averaged 4 mph from the M4 to the centre and the same on the way back. No chance of of going over any speed limit.
Seems to be a totally disorganised city ruled by traffic gridlock.
