May 10, 1992. Two activists broke into a facility at Rockwell International in Seal Beach California and used axes to attack a GPS satellite which was being readied for launch.
Although still in its infancy back in the early 90's, the activists, Keith Kjoller and Peter Lumsdaine, were attempting to target the US NAVSTAR GPS satellite network. They were part of a group known as "The Harriet Tubman-Sarah Connor Brigade" and wanted to protest at the use of GPS for precision warfare.
Of the nine satellites at the facility, one was almost destroyed with damage totalling more than $2 million. For their actions Kjoller and Lumsdaine received 18 months and 2 years in prison respectively after filing guilty pleas.
