News: Galileo: Week Long Outage Partly Due to Software Update

pocketgpsworld.com
A week long outage of the EU's Galileo satellite navigation system was partly due to a security software update.

Carlo des Dirides, Executive Director of the European GNSS Agency, told officials at the European Parliament's Industry Committee that while the problem originated in a timing reference system at a ground control centre near Rome, a backup system at another centre failed to kick in due to a botched security update.

Whilst both issues have now been fixed, the near week long outage that resulted isn't a great look. However it should be pointed out that the service is still in the roll-out phase and not in full operation. Affected receivers were still able to obtain a fix from the American Global Positioning System (GPS), Russia's Glonass and China's Beidou.
