News: Epic fail - Google Maps detour ends in a muddy field

pocketgpsworld.com
This is a corker. With traffic on a road leading to Denver International Airport backing up following a traffic accident, Google Maps suggested a detour.

And so about 100 drivers jumped at the chance to escape the snarl up. But that decision turned out to be a big mistake. The short cut ended in a field and with recent rain and so many vehicles that field quickly became a quagmire, and dozens of drivers were well and truly stuck.

Google have blamed the issue on a mapping error, with a route that should have been marked as not for public use, being incorrectly used in calculations.

This sort of mapping error used to be quite common in the early days of satnav, I recall following a TomTom route in Devon that took me down ever narrower lanes, then rutted lanes, then barely a track only to end up at a locked gate in the middle of nowhere. But so good are our maps now that these errors are rare now.

Still, funny, so long as you are not one of those caught in the melee. And easy to see how they can happen, who amongst us hasn't followed a satnav detour around traffic only to be in a convoy of cars doing the same!
