News: California says you can't check maps on your phone in-car
A California court has ruled that it is illegal to check maps on a phone whilst driving as it is a violation of their distracted driving law. Whilst this clarification of the law has caused caused a lot of outraged headlines, the finer detail is a little less surprising.
The courts ruling suggests that the legislation, where it concerns navigation apps, simply requires that the phone be mounted in a holder and operated hands-free. The phone cannot be touched by the driver.
So, whilst this is not a complete ban on the use of smartphone navigation, the distracted driving law is a bit of a mess though. Drivers are permitted to check paper maps but not those on a smartphone!
As is often the case, the finer points are open to interpretation, so much so that the court suggested it would be down to the state's lawmakers to clarify these issues if necessary.
