Police Cruisers May Get GPS

OMAHA, Neb. -- Omaha police cruisers may soon be getting Global Positioning Systems. The mobile data terminals inside the cruisers could help the department cut down response times.

"If the dispatcher knows this car is closer than the other car, obviously they'd send the closest vehicle without having to ask on the air, 'What's your location?'" said Mike Butera, with Omaha police.

Some officers are worried the GPS system could be used for disciplinary action. No one from Omaha's police union would comment, saying the issue is being discussed during negotiations with the city over contracts.
