Back from holidays and this time our a hire car was equipped with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. I had planned ahead and packed a windscreen mount and charger for the iPhone but it wasn't required. instead I was able to connect to the USB socket and leave the phone in the center console. Having to cope with left hand drive, gears and unfamiliar roads was eased by having access to a familiar satnav interface on a large display in the dashboard. And an added bonus was access to all the streaming radio apps so we could get UK radio stations. Android Auto and CarPlay are so good now that I wonder why manufacturers bother to install satnav at all?

I had a Ford Focus S-Max and a Ford Galaxy recently for hire cars. The built in SatNav was fiddly and awkward and, like you, I used Android Auto (or in your case Apple CarPlay) and it just worked so well. Like you say, it's a known interface and all my locations/searches etc were already in it. Control of music was nice and easy too.

I guess that manufacturers include SatNav still for those who don't have smart phones or don't have a very good data plan. My parents for example have the 'new' Nokia 3310 and a weird little Samsung thing - with buttons! They do, however, also have a Garmin SatNav so if they bought a new car with SatNav built in they would likely use that.

I have unlimited data and am quite techie so I actually think it's quite good that they cater for those less able than I Very Happy
